I built News Briefing, an Android news reader for the WTX News project, with Flutter. It brings UK, politics, business and world coverage into one app with topic browsing and clean article pages. It is live on Google Play, and the iOS version, built from the same code, is in App Store review as of October 2026.

The goal: get readers to the story fast

A news app lives or dies on two moments: finding a story worth reading, and reading it without friction. News Briefing needed a clear way into each section of the coverage and article pages that feel calm and readable on a phone.

What I built

  • Headline feed. A top-stories carousel with topic tabs for UK, politics, business and world news.
  • Article pages. Headline, photography, publication date and estimated reading time, laid out for small screens.
  • Accounts. Email and Google sign-in.
  • Store releases. Published on Google Play, with the iOS build submitted to the App Store.

Why Flutter for a news app

Flutter draws its own interface rather than relying on each platform’s components. For an editorial product that matters: typography, image layouts and spacing look the same on every Android phone and on iPhone, so the brand reads consistently.

It is also one codebase for both platforms. Launching Android first and following with iOS meant the second release reused the same screens, logic and sign-in, rather than starting again. I compare Flutter with the other options in cross-platform vs native apps.

The result

News Briefing is live on Google Play, giving WTX News readers topic browsing, a top-stories feed and focused article pages on Android. The iOS version is in App Store review as of October 2026, built from the same Flutter code.

Building a content or news app?

A cross-platform app for iOS and Android starts at $12,000 with me, usually 8 to 14 weeks plus store review, and launching on one store first is a sensible way to start.
